Laruni Diana Mary, also known as Mary.D, bron1998 in Uganda and is a multidisciplinary visual artist. Her primary medium is maize husks, and she explores its possibilities through various techniques.
Mary derives her inspiration from diverse vantage points, manifesting in sculpture, photography, digital art, fashion, installations, and performance. In her works, she expresses themes and narratives that delve into the complexities of social, political, economic, and environmental aspects and their influence on the contemporary world. Her focus revolves around personal reflection, particularly the struggles faced as an African woman in understanding and defining her identity and roles within society. Themes also encompass gender, identity, relationships, and understanding one’s dwelling within their communities. While deeply connected to her personal growth and discovery, Mary’s work serves as an encouragement for others to find freedom, power, and hope within themselves despite contemporary societal issues.
Mary.D earned her bachelor’s degree with first-class honors from Uganda Christian University in 2022. Her works have been featured in group exhibitions such as “Beyond Memories” (Uganda Christian University, 2022) and “The Resilient Spirit Exhibition” (Muumba Collective, 2023). Mary.D held her inaugural solo exhibition, “Mother of Child,” at Agandy Studios in 2023. She was also part of an artist residency facilitated by 32 Degrees East/Uganda da Art Trust in 2022 and participated in “The Resilient Spirit Workshop” organized by Muumba Collective in 2023.
